Fabric for Women's Institutional Uniforms: Salwar-Kameez, Kurta, Dupatta and Pinafore
How to specify and buy fabric for women's uniform sets in Indian institutions: three-piece salwar-kameez and kurta sets, dupattas, sarees and pinafores. Width, indicative consumption, opacity, and the shade-matching trap when a set uses two different fabrics.

Quick answer
Women's institutional uniforms in India are usually three-piece sets rather than shirt-and-trouser, and that changes three things in a fabric order. Consumption is counted per component, not per garment, and runs roughly 2 to 2.5 m for a kameez or kurta, 2 to 2.5 m for a salwar and 2 to 2.5 m for a dupatta at dress-material widths. Opacity matters as much as weight in light shades. And when the dupatta or blouse is a different construction from the main fabric, the same dye recipe will read as a different shade, so both components have to be approved together.
Which programs this covers
A large share of institutional uniform demand in India is not shirt-and-trouser. Teachers, nurses and hospital support staff, hotel and housekeeping teams, bank and front-office staff, and girl students at many schools all wear sets built from a kurta or kameez with a salwar and often a dupatta, or a saree with a matching blouse.
These orders behave differently from a corporate shirt-and-trouser rollout, and most fabric guidance quietly assumes the shirt-and-trouser case. The specification questions are the same ones, weight, blend, width, shrinkage, fastness, but the arithmetic and the shade approval both need handling differently. Count consumption per component, not per uniform
A three-piece set is three separate cutting problems. Treating it as one garment is the most common way a bulk order comes out short, because the dupatta is often forgotten in the first estimate and then has to be added as a top-up in a different dye lot.
The figures below are indicative planning numbers at typical dress-material widths of roughly 110 to 122 cm. They are not a guaranteed yield. Actual consumption depends on the size mix, the sleeve and hem length, the cutting layout and whether the fabric has a pattern that has to be matched.

Width changes the maths, and suiting width usually helps
Traditional dress material is sold at narrower widths than uniform suiting. Suiting-width fabric, which is what most uniform mills including us weave, generally runs around 150 cm. Wider fabric usually means better cutting yield on a kurta or kameez, because a full body panel and its sleeves can often be laid up more efficiently across the width.
The consequence is that you cannot take a per-piece meterage quoted for dress material and apply it to suiting-width fabric. Ask your stitching unit to lay a marker for your actual size mix at the width you are being quoted, and use that number for the bulk order. This is the single highest-value step in a women's uniform order, because the difference between a narrow-width estimate and a real 150 cm marker across a few hundred sets is a meaningful quantity of fabric.

The shade trap in a two-fabric set
This is the failure that causes the most complaints in women's uniform programs, and it is entirely predictable.
A set often uses two different fabrics: a heavier cloth for the kameez and salwar, and a lighter, softer, more drapeable cloth for the dupatta. Or a suiting for the kurta and a shirting for the blouse. When two different constructions or two different blend ratios are dyed to the same recipe, they do not come out looking the same. Surface texture, yarn count, weave and fibre ratio all change how light reflects off the cloth and how much dye the fibre takes up. The same recipe on two fabrics reads as two shades.
The fix is procedural, not chemical. Approve the components together, physically, side by side, in daylight, at the lab dip stage. Approve the dupatta against the kameez fabric rather than against a colour reference on its own, and keep the approved pair as the reference for every future lot. - Approve every component of the set in one sitting, physically together, in daylight.
- Never approve a dupatta or blouse shade from a screen, a printed swatch or a separate visit.
- Order all components of a program in one lot where the quantities allow it.
- If a component has to be reordered later, match it against the retained approved pair, not against a used garment.
Opacity matters as much as weight
In light shades, white, cream, pale blue, pastel pink, a fabric that passes on weight can still fail on opacity. This is a practical and a dignity issue for the wearer, and it is the complaint most likely to force a mid-programme change, which is the expensive kind.
Opacity depends on more than GSM. A tight sett, a fuller yarn, a plain or twill weave rather than a loose open one, and adequate cover factor all matter. A 200 GSM fabric in a loose open construction can show through more than a 180 GSM fabric in a tight one.
Test it the way it will be experienced, not on a table. Hold the swatch against skin under strong overhead light and against daylight from a window, and do it after washing rather than only on new cloth, because some fabrics open up slightly in the first few washes. Weight and construction by role
The general rules follow the same logic as any uniform: heavier and tighter for wear and structure, lighter and softer for comfort and drape. What is specific to these garments is that a single set often needs both at once, so a set is usually specified as two fabrics rather than one.

Patterned and checked fabric costs extra meterage
If the set uses a check, a stripe or any repeating pattern, the pattern has to align across seams, across the front opening, and often between the kurta and the dupatta. Matching a repeat means cutting to the pattern rather than to the most efficient layout, and that consumes additional fabric beyond the plain-fabric estimate.

Getting the order right the first time
The sequence that avoids most problems is short. Fix the garment list and the component list for every role, including the dupatta. Get a real marker laid at the quoted width for your actual size mix. Approve all components of the shade together, physically, and keep the approved reference. Order the whole programme in one lot with the buffer included, because a component ordered later is a new dye lot.
Custom shades are woven from 500 m per shade with us, and 50 m per shade from running stock, so a programme with several roles in one colour usually clears the custom threshold comfortably even when no single component does. Where a set needs two constructions in one colour, each construction counts as its own minimum, which is worth knowing before the shade count is finalised.

- How much fabric does a salwar-kameez uniform set need?
- As an indicative planning figure at dress-material widths, around 2 to 2.5 m for the kameez, 2 to 2.5 m for the salwar and 2 to 2.5 m for the dupatta, so roughly 6 to 7 m for a full three-piece set before wastage. These are planning numbers, not a guaranteed yield. Get a marker laid for your actual size mix at the width you are quoted, because at 150 cm suiting width the numbers change.

- Is suiting-width fabric suitable for kurtas and salwars?
- Yes, and it often improves cutting yield because body panels and sleeves lay up more efficiently across a wider width. What you cannot do is reuse a per-piece meterage quoted for narrow dress material. Ask your stitching unit for a marker at the actual quoted width before sizing the bulk order.
- Do we need a separate minimum for each component of the set?
