Doctor coat versus doctor gown

Buyers use both words. A doctor's coat (lab coat or apron) is the knee-length white coat worn over clothes on rounds and in out-patient work; it wants a structured, crisp cloth that holds its shape. A doctor's gown usually means a surgical or OT gown worn in theatre, which is a separate, lighter brief covered on our scrubs and OT pages. For coats, the deciding test is white retention: a white that greys or yellows after a few months of hot washing makes a new coat look old.

FAQ

Fabric for Doctor Coats: common questions

Which fabric is best for a doctor coat?
A polyester or poly-viscose plain weave around 185-215 GSM in a white finished to resist greying. Super Fine 9952 gives the crispest white; Benzzi is softer and more breathable for long shifts.
Is a doctor gown the same as a doctor coat?
Not usually. A doctor's coat is the white coat worn over clothes; a doctor's gown often means a surgical or OT gown worn in theatre, which needs a lighter, different fabric. Tell us the garment and we suggest the cloth for it.
What is the minimum order for doctor coat fabric?
50 m per shade from ready stock, 500 m per shade for a custom construction woven to order. Price is on request.
Which fabrics work best for doctor coats?
We recommend Benzzi, Sonata, Grado 1st and Super Fine 9952, each suited to the demands of doctor coats. Every fabric ships with spec and MOQ.

What is the minimum fabric order for doctor coats?
50 m per shade from ready stock, and 500 m per shade for custom shades or constructions woven to order.

Yes. Custom shades are matched to your approved standard and woven to order from 500 m per shade, then held as a dye lot so reorders stay consistent.
