Stretch and Lycra Uniform Fabric, Explained
What elastane does in a woven uniform suiting, why recovery matters more than stretch, the two weights we weave, and what stretch changes in cutting, sewing and laundering.

Quick answer
A stretch uniform suiting is a normal woven cloth with a small proportion of elastane in it. The point is not how far it stretches but how completely it comes back: elastane is what stops a trouser bagging at the knee and seat over a long shift. We weave it as a piece-dyed polyester-lycra in two weights, Glacier Soft Lycra at 177 GSM with a soft fluid handle and Knit Lotus Lycra at 216 GSM with a comfort-soft finish, both at 147 cm. It typically costs more than the rigid equivalent, and it needs a lower ironing and drying temperature, because heat is what shortens elastane's life.
What "stretch" means in a woven uniform cloth
There are two unrelated ways a woven fabric can give. Mechanical stretch comes from the construction: a high-twist yarn or a crepe weave lets the cloth extend slightly and then relax back on its own. Elastane stretch comes from a fiber, a polyurethane filament sold under trade names including Lycra, spun into or alongside the ground yarn.

Direction matters as much as amount, and it is the line buyers most often leave out. In woven uniform suitings the elastane is usually carried in the weft, so the cloth gives across its width rather than along its length. That is the direction a trouser or a skirt needs, since the strain runs around the leg and seat. A cloth that gives in both directions is a different construction at a different price, and uniform tailoring rarely calls for it. Ask for the elastane percentage and the stretch direction on the spec sheet rather than accepting the word "stretch" on its own.
Recovery matters more than stretch
Buyers ask how much a stretch cloth stretches. The number that decides whether the programme is a success is the other one: how much of that extension the cloth gives back, and how many cycles it keeps doing it for.
A cloth that extends generously and recovers poorly is worse than a rigid one. It produces exactly the failure the stretch was bought to prevent, a permanent bag at the knee and seat, and it produces it faster because the garment was cut closer in the first place. Elastane is what supplies recovery; the weave on its own supplies extension.
This is why a stretch trial is run on garments and not on swatches. Put a pilot batch on one shift for a few weeks and look at knee and seat, because that is where a recovery problem shows up first and where a lab test will not show it at all.
Where stretch earns its place
Stretch is worth paying for when the role moves through the shift and the cut is fitted. It is wasted money on a loose garment worn standing still.

- Corporate and executive programmes with a fitted cut, where the garment has to still look pressed at hour ten.
- Women's institutional tailoring, where a closer cut through the hip and waist is the norm and a rigid cloth shows strain earliest.
Where it is not worth it: loose workwear, school programmes, and any garment whose service life is decided by abrasion rather than fit. There, weight and weave decide the outcome and the elastane is a cost with no return.
The two weights we weave

Both are piece-dyed and both start at 147 cm, so the yardage maths is the same as for the rest of the polyester range. Every shade held is on the shade card, including BC-GSL-31 Khaki on Glacier Soft Lycra for force and security programmes.
What stretch changes in cutting and sewing
A stretch cloth is not a drop-in replacement for a rigid one on the cutting table. It arrives on the roll under tension, and if it is cut in that state the panels relax afterwards and the garment comes up short. The cloth has to be spread and left to relax before marking, and the tailor has to be told to expect it.
- Relax the cloth after spreading, before marking and cutting, rather than cutting straight off the roll.
- Keep the stretch direction consistent across every panel; a panel cut on the wrong axis will not move with the garment.
- Use a ballpoint needle and a seam that can extend with the cloth, or the thread becomes the limiting factor and seams pop before the fabric gives.
- Fuse and press at the temperature the cloth is rated for, not at the temperature used for rigid polyester.
- Cut the pilot batch and the bulk order from the same relaxed state, or the two will not measure alike.
None of this is exotic, but it does need saying in the tech pack. Most disappointing stretch programmes are a cutting-room problem rather than a fabric one.
Care: heat is what kills elastane
Elastane is the least heat-tolerant component in the cloth. Repeated high-temperature washing, hot tumble drying and hot pressing degrade the filament, and once it has gone the garment does not recover its shape, whatever the polyester around it is doing. A stretch uniform that has gone slack has usually been laundered, not worn, to death.
Chlorine bleach attacks it as well, which matters if the programme shares a laundry with white garments on a bleach cycle. Institutional laundries run to a fixed programme, so the constraint has to be agreed with them before the cloth is chosen rather than printed on a label afterwards. - Wash warm rather than hot, and specify a maximum temperature in the care brief.
- Keep tumble drying low, or line dry; heat in the dryer does more damage than heat in the wash.
- Avoid chlorine bleach on stretch garments; use an oxygen-based alternative if whitening is needed.
- Press at the rated temperature only, and check with the laundry what their press actually runs at.
How to specify a stretch programme
- Say elastane, and say where: a percentage and a direction, not just the word "stretch", which a high-twist rigid cloth can also claim.
- Ask for extension and recovery, not extension alone, and treat recovery as the acceptance line.
- Run a garment pilot on one shift before the bulk order; 50 m from a stocked shade is enough to cut one.
- Agree the laundry constraints with the laundry before the cloth is approved.
- Lock the shade against a held reference the same way as any piece-dyed cloth; stretch changes nothing about dye-lot discipline.
- Give the cutting room the relaxation and needle instructions in writing.

Frequently asked questions
- How much stretch does a uniform suiting need?
- Less than buyers expect. A small percentage of elastane in the weft is enough for a fitted trouser or skirt to move with the wearer. The figure that matters is recovery, how completely the cloth returns, because a cloth that extends well and recovers poorly bags faster than a rigid one.
- Is stretch fabric less durable than a rigid suiting?
- The polyester ground is as durable as any other polyester cloth. The elastane is the part with a shorter life, and heat is what shortens it. A stretch uniform laundered within its rated temperature holds its shape for its service life; one run through a hot commercial cycle will not.
- Can stretch fabric be used for a whole uniform, shirt included?
- It is usually specified for the tailored pieces, trousers, skirts and fitted jackets, where fit and recovery decide the outcome. Shirting is normally a separate lighter cloth, so the two are matched on shade rather than on construction.
- Which of your two stretch qualities should I start with?
- Glacier Soft Lycra at 177 GSM for most programmes, since the softer, more fluid handle suits cabin crew and front-of-house wear. Move to Knit Lotus Lycra at 216 GSM where the tailoring is structured and has to hold a pressed line through a long day.
- Does stretch fabric shrink differently?
- It relaxes rather than shrinks, which is a different problem with the same symptom. Cloth cut under roll tension comes up short after the first wash because the panels return to their relaxed length. Relaxing the cloth before cutting is the control, not a shrinkage allowance.
- Is stretch suiting suitable for police or security uniforms?
