What "Made In-House" Actually Means When a Fabric Mill Says It
Almost every Indian fabric mill claims to make everything in-house. A metre of uniform suiting passes through spinning, weaving, dyeing, finishing and testing, and very few mills own all of them. What the phrase hides, and what actually protects your shade.

The phrase does a lot of work, and hides a lot
Read enough fabric mill websites and you will find the same sentence on almost all of them: everything is made in-house, under one roof, from fibre to finished cloth. It sounds like an obvious good. It is also, for most mills, not quite true, and the gap between the claim and the reality is where a lot of buyer disappointment starts.
The honest version is more useful. A metre of uniform suiting passes through six or seven distinct industrial stages, each needing different machinery, different chemistry and different expertise. Very few mills anywhere own all of them. What matters to a buyer is not how many stages one company owns, but whether the chain is accountable and whether the shade can be repeated next year.
The stages a metre of uniform fabric actually passes through
- Spinning: fibre becomes yarn. For poly-viscose, polyester and viscose are blended before spinning, so the blend ratio is fixed at the yarn stage, not later at the fabric stage.
- Warping and sizing: warp yarn is wound onto a beam and coated with a size, usually starch or PVA, so it survives the abrasion of the loom. Sizing is often called the heart of weaving, and it has to be washed back out later.
- Weaving: warp and weft interlace on the loom. What comes off is greige fabric, still carrying size, oils and impurities. It is not saleable cloth yet.
- Preparation: singeing, desizing and scouring strip out the size and the oils. Skip or rush this and dye cannot penetrate evenly, which is a shade problem that originates before the dyebath.
- Dyeing: colour goes on to a recipe. Temperature, pH, water mineral content, timing and dye-to-fibre ratio all have to repeat exactly for the next lot to match.
- Finishing: heat setting on a pin stenter at roughly 180 to 220 degrees C is what dimensionally stabilises polyester-blend suiting, along with whatever hand and performance finishes the fabric needs.
- Testing and packing: shrinkage, colour fastness, GSM and width checked against the spec before rolls are graded and dispatched.
Why almost nobody owns all of it
Look at the structure of Bhilwara, the cluster that produces a large share of India's poly-viscose suiting, and the reason becomes obvious. Trade and chamber sources count roughly 400 to 500 weaving units in the district against only about 19 or 20 processing houses. Sources disagree on the exact counts, but not on the shape: weaving units outnumber processing houses by something like twenty-five to one.
That ratio is not a failure of the cluster. It is how the cluster works. Dyeing and finishing are capital-heavy, chemically specialised and only economic at scale, so the district concentrated them into a small number of large process houses that serve many weavers. Bhilwara wove before it could process at all: until 1977 grey fabric went to Delhi and came back finished.
Full vertical integration also carries costs that marketing copy never mentions. Trade literature on integrated manufacturing lists high capital lock-up, longer internal lead times because every extra stage adds a queue point, and the difficulty of keeping every unit loaded at once. Owning the dyehouse is not automatically faster or better. It is a different set of trade-offs.
What we do, and what we do not
Weaving is ours. We run 24 looms at our unit in Village Atoon, 16 double-width Sulzer and 8 single-width, and the fabric structure, the construction and the loom quality are decisions we make and answer for directly.
Dyeing, processing, finishing and testing run through partnered processing houses in Bhilwara. We do not own a dyehouse and we do not claim to. What we own is the relationship, the recipe history and the accountability: the spec is ours, the approved lab dip is held against your program, and if a lot comes back off-shade it does not ship.
We say this plainly because a buyer who is told everything happens under one roof, and then discovers the fabric travelled to a process house, has reason to wonder what else was overstated. The structure is normal. Hiding it is the problem.
What actually protects your shade
Shade consistency across reorders is the thing most uniform buyers are really asking about when they ask who owns what. The honest answer is that ownership is not the control. The recipe and the approval trail are.
Dye lot variation is process-owned: dyebath temperature, water mineral content, pH, timing, dye-to-fibre ratio, and upstream of all of it the consistency of scouring and bleaching. Residual oils from poor preparation block dye diffusion, so a shade failure often originates two stages before the dyebath. Mixing dyes without accounting for compatibility shifts uptake and moves the shade off standard.
- An approved lab dip that becomes the physical standard, not a verbal description of the colour.
- A locked recipe carried forward on a production card, so a reorder is dyed to a number rather than matched by eye.
- A reference swatch retained against your program and checked before every dispatch.
- A shade band or continuity card across the rolls of a lot, so variation inside the lot is approved before cutting rather than discovered afterwards.
Questions that separate a weaver from a reseller
- Which stages happen where, physically? A straight answer names locations. An evasive one repeats the phrase in-house.
- Can I see the loom shed running? Equipment present but idle, a visit repeatedly rescheduled, or a floor under renovation are the classic red flags.
- Will my pre-production sample run on the same line as the bulk order? The answer should be yes, and it should be specific.
- What does your ISO 9001 certificate actually cover? ISO 9001 certifies a quality management system and carries a defined scope naming what is included and excluded. It does not certify any individual product.
- Can I verify the GSTIN? It is free to check on the GST portal, states whether the business is a manufacturer or a trader, and a cancelled status or a state-code mismatch against the claimed city tells you something quickly.

- What is the difference between a composite mill and a weaving mill?
- A composite mill carries out spinning, weaving and processing within one company. A weaving mill weaves and sends fabric out for dyeing and finishing. Both are normal in India, and Indian textile statistics count them separately. Neither structure is automatically better for a buyer; what matters is who is accountable for the spec.
- Does a mill need to own its dyehouse to keep shades consistent?
- No. Consistency comes from an approved lab dip, a locked dye recipe, controlled process variables and a retained reference swatch checked before dispatch. A mill working with a long-standing processing partner against a locked recipe can repeat a shade; a mill that owns a dyehouse but approves shades by eye cannot.
- How do I check whether a fabric supplier actually manufactures?
- Ask which stage happens at which physical location, ask to see the loom shed running, and ask whether the pre-production sample will run on the same line as the bulk. Verify the GSTIN on the GST portal, which states the nature of the business, and ask for the ISO certificate with its scope rather than just the logo.
- What is grey or greige fabric?
- Fabric straight off the loom, before processing. It still carries the sizing chemicals applied to the warp before weaving, plus oils and impurities, so it cannot take dye evenly until it has been desized, scoured and prepared. It is an intermediate product, not finished cloth.
- Is fabric woven in one place and dyed in another lower quality?
- Not inherently. In clusters where processing is concentrated in a small number of large houses, the specialist processing house often runs better controlled and better maintained equipment than a small in-house line would. The risk is not the split, it is a split with nobody accountable across it.
