When to Order School Uniform Fabric from India for the New Zealand School Year
A planning calendar for New Zealand schools and uniform companies buying fabric from India: the official 2027 term dates, why the order date is set by the shelf date rather than the first day of term, where Diwali, the Indian financial year end and the monsoon fall against the New Zealand school year, and how ready stock and custom shades change the plan.

Quick answer
The New Zealand school year starts in late January or early February. For 2027 the Ministry of Education sets Term 1 to start between Thursday 28 January and Wednesday 3 February, with each school choosing its own day in that window. Fabric from India has to be made, shipped, cleared, cut, sewn and put on sale before then, so plan backwards from the date garments must be in the uniform shop, not from the first day of term. The run-up to Term 1 falls across Diwali, India's busiest festive weeks in October or November, so a custom shade for the new school year needs to be ordered and approved well before them. Ready stock is the faster route when time is short.
When the New Zealand school year starts
New Zealand state and state-integrated schools work to term dates set by the Ministry of Education. The year has four terms, and Term 1 does not start on one fixed day: the Ministry sets a window and each school picks its own start inside it. That is why two schools in the same city can go back on different days.
The 2027 dates below are the ones the Ministry set after revising Term 1 in 2025. An error in the half-day count meant the latest Term 1 start moved by one day, from Thursday 4 February to Wednesday 3 February. If you have an older calendar showing 4 February, it is out of date.
| 2027 | Dates | Holidays after it |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 | Starts between Thursday 28 January and Wednesday 3 February; ends Friday 9 April | 10 to 26 April |
| Term 2 | Tuesday 27 April to Friday 2 July | 3 to 18 July |
| Term 3 | Monday 19 July to Friday 24 September | 25 September to 10 October |
| Term 4 | Monday 11 October to no later than Friday 17 December | 5 to 6 weeks of summer holiday |
For 2028, Term 1 opens from Monday 31 January at the earliest. Always confirm the exact start date with the school itself.
Work back from the shelf date, not the first day of term
The date that matters for a fabric order is not the first day of school. It is the day the finished garments must be on sale in the uniform shop or ready for the school's own fitting day, and that comes before term starts, not on it. Every stage between the mill and that shelf takes time, and only the first two happen in India.
| Stage | Where it happens | What stretches it |
|---|---|---|
| Shade approval | Between you and the mill | A new custom shade needs lab dips and sign-off before bulk dyeing |
| Fabric production and despatch | India | Custom shade or construction, volume, Indian peak seasons |
| Sea freight and customs clearance | In transit, then New Zealand | Sailing schedules, transhipment, entry paperwork |
| Cutting and sewing | Your garment maker | Size range, number of styles, the maker's own peak before Term 1 |
| Delivery to the uniform shop | New Zealand | Labelling and stock checks before sale |
Garment makers are busiest in the same pre-Term 1 weeks as everyone else, so a late fabric arrival loses its sewing slot as well as its shipping time. Our lead time guide explains what drives the India side, and the New Zealand import guide covers duty, origin paperwork and the customs entry.
Where the Indian calendar cuts across the New Zealand one
India's busy seasons do not line up with the New Zealand school year, and three of them land at awkward points for a school buyer.
- Diwali, in October or November, falls in the run-up to Term 1. Weaving, the partnered processing houses and road transport all slow in the same fortnight. That is often exactly when a New Zealand buyer finalises the order for the new school year, so a custom shade for Term 1 should be ordered and approved before the festive weeks, not during them.
- The Indian financial year closes on 31 March, during New Zealand's Term 1. The weeks before it bring a despatch rush across the Indian trade. It matters for top-up orders after the first weeks of term show which sizes ran short.
- The monsoon, roughly June to September, covers New Zealand's Terms 2 and 3. It does not slow weaving, but it lengthens dyeing and drying at the processing houses. A custom-shade reorder placed mid-year for winter items is the order most exposed to it.
The full list of Indian peak seasons and what each one affects is in the lead time guide.
Ready stock or a custom shade
The choice between ready stock and weave-to-order sets both the earliest you can commit and the smallest quantity you can buy. Ready-stock shades are already woven and finished, so the main work before despatch is picking, checking and packing, with a minimum of 50 m per shade. A custom shade or construction carries the full production cycle and a minimum of 500 m per shade.
For a school changing its colours or adding a new item for next year, the custom route is usually the right one. It is also the one that has to start earliest, because the shade has to be approved before bulk dyeing begins. Our guide to lab dips and shade approval explains that step. For a school keeping its existing uniform and only needing more cloth, a matching ready-stock shade can take weeks off the plan.
Mid-year top-ups and the next year's reorder
A school's uniform fabric is rarely bought once. Top-ups follow the first weeks of Term 1, winter items follow later, and the next year's bulk order follows the end-of-year stocktake. Each reorder has to match the cloth already in the shop and in the classroom, which is a shade-matching problem as much as a timing one. Keep the approved standard and the earlier lot details, and quote them on every reorder. Our school group case study shows how that works across repeat orders.
If the school's supply is tendered, remember that the uniform company holding the contract is usually our buyer, not the school. Who decides what, and how New Zealand schools choose suppliers, is covered in our guide to who buys uniforms in New Zealand.
What we are not claiming
We do not publish fixed transit times or guaranteed delivery dates, because sailings, transhipment and clearance vary by port and season and are outside our control once the cloth leaves India. The term dates above are the Ministry of Education's dates for state and state-integrated schools. Private schools can set their own. Confirm live production timings with us against your shade, construction and volume before you commit a date to a school.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- When does the 2027 school year start in New Zealand?
- Term 1 2027 starts between Thursday 28 January and Wednesday 3 February, with each school choosing its own day in that window, and ends on Friday 9 April. The latest start was moved from 4 February to 3 February when the Ministry of Education revised the 2027 dates in 2025.
- When should a New Zealand school order uniform fabric from India for Term 1?
- Work back from the date garments must be on sale or ready for fitting, which comes before the first day of term. Allow for shade approval, production, sea freight, customs clearance and sewing. For a custom shade, order and approve it before Diwali in October or November, when Indian production slows.
- Does the Indian monsoon delay fabric for New Zealand schools?
- It can delay dyed cloth. The monsoon, roughly June to September, does not slow weaving but lengthens dyeing and drying at the processing houses. It falls in New Zealand's Terms 2 and 3, so mid-year custom-shade reorders are the orders most exposed.
- Is ready stock faster than a custom shade?
- Yes. Ready stock is already woven and finished, so it mainly needs picking, checking and packing, with a minimum of 50 m per shade. A custom shade needs approval, dyeing, weaving and finishing, with a minimum of 500 m per shade.
