Scrubs That Survive Daily Hot-Wash Cycles for a Multi-Site Hospital Group

A hospital group's scrubs were pilling and greying within months under commercial hot-wash laundering, forcing early replacement across every site.

The challenge

Scrub fabric from a previous supplier was pilling and losing its white within four to six months of daily 90°C commercial laundering, well short of the group's annual replacement budget. Hospital laundering is the hardest wash profile a uniform fabric faces: near-boiling water, industrial detergent, and a wash frequency of five to seven cycles a week rather than the one or two a corporate shirt sees. A fabric that performs well in a domestic-wash lab test can still fail on this profile inside a season, which is exactly what had happened. Every site in the group was replacing garments on the same accelerated cycle, so the failure scaled with headcount.

Our approach

  • We started with the laundry, not the fabric. The group's wash temperature, detergent chemistry and cycle count were reviewed first, because a recommendation made without that profile is a guess. Against that profile we recommended moving the coloured scrubs to a blend with a higher pill-resistance rating and the white and pale clinical wear to Super Fine 9952, a 188 GSM dyed polyester at 142 cm width whose colour is engineered specifically to survive institutional-strength laundering without fading or bleed.
  • Sample batches were run through the hospital's own commercial laundry for several weeks before bulk approval, rather than relying on lab-only durability claims. Pilling and greying show up on a real wash line long before they show on a spec sheet, and testing on the buyer's actual equipment removed the argument about whose wash cycle was at fault.
  • Bulk supply was scheduled in phases across the group's sites so each site's existing stock could be rotated out as it failed rather than written off all at once. Because the replacement fabrics are held to a locked dye reference, a site that converted in month one and a site that converted in month nine still received the same shade, so the group never had two visibly different generations of scrubs on the same ward.
  • White scrub tops got their own line in the trial, because a white that fails does so in two different ways. Yellowing on polyester comes from heat, chlorine bleach and optical brightener breakdown; greying is soil redeposited from overloaded or under-rinsed loads. The laundry's chemistry was adjusted rather than the fabric, and the pale clinical shades were checked for show-through at the chosen weight, since a scrub that thins is judged on opacity long before it tears.

Outcome

The group extended scrub replacement cycles well beyond the previous six-month average without changing wash frequency, and the phased rotation meant no site had to absorb a full re-kit in a single budget cycle.
