Suez Could Be Back by March 2027. How European and UK Buyers Should Plan Fabric Lead Times
Most container lines have sent India to Europe cargo around the Cape of Good Hope since late 2023. In October 2026 the Suez Canal Authority said Maersk expects all its services back through the canal by March 2027, and the head of Kuehne+Nagel said most lines should return by late in the first quarter or early in the second. For a buyer in Europe or the UK planning a spring or summer 2027 uniform programme, here is what to plan on.

What was said in October
Most container lines stopped using the Suez Canal for Asia to Europe services in November 2023, after attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, and went the long way round Africa instead. Plans to come back were set back again after the strikes on Iran in late February 2026. Through 2026 some services have returned in stages.
Two statements in October put a date on a full return. On 22 October the chief executive of Kuehne+Nagel, one of the largest freight forwarders, told Reuters that most container lines should be back on the Suez route by late in the first quarter or early in the second quarter of 2027, while warning that geopolitics remained volatile. On 26 October the Suez Canal Authority said Maersk had told it all of Maersk's services were expected back through the canal by March 2027. The Authority counted 276 Maersk-linked transits from January to September 2026, against 146 in the same months of 2025.
Read both carefully. They are expectations, not published schedules. Neither names which services move when, and both depend on the security situation holding. Returns have been announced and reversed before.
What a Suez return changes for a fabric order
The main change is time at sea. Going round the Cape of Good Hope adds roughly ten to fourteen days to an Asia to Europe voyage, as we set out in our freight post. Routing back through Suez takes most of that away on the services that switch.
The second change is cost, more slowly. Ships sailing the longer route tie up more vessels to carry the same cargo. When they come back through Suez that capacity is freed, and Drewry had already named the gradual Suez return as one of the forces pushing Asia to Europe rates down in September. Rates have since risen again on Middle East tension, so a return eases the pressure rather than guaranteeing a fall.
What it does not change: weaving time, processing time, inspection, the duty at your own border, or the paperwork. Sea transit is one block of a uniform fabric lead time, and for most programmes it is not the biggest one.
How to plan a spring or summer 2027 order
Plan on Cape transit times until your forwarder confirms your sailing goes through Suez. If the route returns early, your cloth arrives early, which costs a few days of storage. If you plan on Suez timing and the return slips, your programme starts late. The first mistake is cheap and the second is not.
Ask about the routing at booking, not at order. When a lane switches routes, sailings can bunch and some arrive close together, so a fixed delivery date is safer with a small buffer either way. On FOB terms you or your forwarder choose the sailing; on CIF the shipper does, so the Incoterm on your contract decides who carries this question.
Do not hold an order back waiting for cheaper freight. On a container of uniform cloth, freight is a small share of the landed cost against the cloth itself and the duty at your border. For UK buyers that duty is falling under the India-UK trade agreement, and EU buyers are watching the India-EU deal. Those are larger numbers than a month of freight movement.
If you are planning a 2027 programme and want a lead time worked out against your delivery date, Request Catalog and tell us the date the cloth needs to be with your garment maker.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- Is the Suez Canal open for container ships now?
- It is open, and some services have returned, but most Asia to Europe capacity was still going round Africa through 2026. In October 2026 shipping industry leaders said most lines expect to be back on the Suez route by late in the first quarter or early in the second quarter of 2027.
- How much shorter is the trip from India to Europe through Suez?
- Roughly ten to fourteen days shorter than the route round the Cape of Good Hope, depending on the service and the port of discharge.
- Should I plan my 2027 uniform order on Suez transit times?
- No. Plan on Cape transit times until your forwarder confirms your sailing routes through Suez. Arriving a few days early costs storage; arriving late can delay a whole programme.
