What hospital bed sheet fabric has to survive

A hospital laundry is nothing like a household one. Bed sheets go through hot wash cycles at high frequency, often daily, run through industrial washers and dryers built for volume and speed rather than gentleness on fabric. Over months of this cycle, a sheet that isn't built for it will pill, thin out at the centre where a patient's weight sits, or lose its woven pattern and start looking worn even though it's technically still in service.

That's why institutional bed sheet fabric is specified differently from retail bedding. The weight, weave and fiber all need to hold up to repeated high-temperature washing without the fabric losing body or the pattern fading into an uneven blur. Getting this right up front matters more for bed sheets than for most other hospital textiles, because sheets are washed more often than almost anything else in a hospital's linen room.

Big Line and Small Line: same cloth, different pattern scale

Our Big Line and Small Line sheets are the same fabric in every way that affects durability. Both are 100% polyester, both weigh in at 178 GSM, and both are woven at 147cm (58in) width. The only difference is the scale of the line pattern: Big Line is woven in a bold, more visible pattern, Small Line in a fine, subtler one.

Which one to order usually comes down to how the pattern reads at scale across a ward, not a durability trade-off. A bold pattern shows less visibly when sheets are slightly mismatched across a large linen inventory; a fine pattern gives a plainer, more understated look on the bed. Either one is built to the same institutional-strength, high-frequency laundering standard, so choose on appearance and existing linen stock, not on which will last longer.

Premium poly-viscose: a softer handle for high-turnover wards

Where the polyester lines prioritise durability above all else, our Premium sheet is built for wards where patient comfort against the fabric matters more, without giving up the ability to handle high-turnover hospital and healthcare laundry. It's a poly-viscose 70/30 blend at 192 GSM, heavier than the polyester lines, woven at the same 147cm width.

The viscose content gives the sheet a fuller, softer handle than a pure polyester weave, which is the main reason to step up to Premium. It suits wards with longer patient stays or higher comfort expectations, where the extra handle is worth the higher weight per metre. For high-volume general wards where sheets are changed and washed constantly and cost per metre carries more weight, the lighter 178 GSM polyester lines remain the more practical choice.

Width and cutting yield for hospital bedding

All three of our hospital bed sheet fabrics are woven at 147cm (58in) width. This is the standard width we supply institutional bed-sheeting in, and it's worth confirming against your own cutting plan before ordering, since flat sheets, fitted sheets and pillow covers each use the width differently once you account for hems and tucking allowance.

Comparing the three hospital bed sheet fabrics

Big Line and Small Line are interchangeable on durability, so pick between them on pattern appearance. Premium is the one genuine step up in weight and handle, worth it where patient comfort or longer-stay wards justify the difference.

The Medical Textiles QCO: what applies to hospital bed sheets

Bed sheets and pillow covers for medical use are one of the few finished textile articles in India under a Quality Control Order. The Medical Textiles (Quality Control) Order, 2024, notified as S.O. 4634(E) on 23 October 2024 in supersession of the 2023 order, lists Bedsheet and Pillow Cover in Schedule B against IS 17630:2021. Articles in the schedule must conform to that standard and carry the Standard Mark under a BIS licence, with the Bureau of Indian Standards and the Textiles Committee named as the certifying and enforcing authorities. The order does not apply to goods meant for export.

The obligation sits on the finished article, not on the roll of cloth. A converter or stitching unit that makes sheets and pillow covers for Indian hospitals is the party that needs the licence and the mark. As the fabric mill we do not hold, and cannot hold, a licence for an article we do not make. What we can do is document the cloth: composition, construction, GSM, width and the test reports from our partnered Bhilwara laboratories, so the sheet maker's own conformity file has the fabric evidence it needs.

Two practical points. The schedule carried an implementation date of 1 April 2024 for bed sheets and pillow covers and the order has been amended since, so check the current position on the BIS website before a tender, as our guide to QCOs and ISI marks sets out. And if a hospital tender asks for an ISI mark on the bed sheet, that request is aimed at the finished sheet, and the sheet maker is the right party to answer it.
