Woven Shirt or Knit Polo: The Corporate Uniform Decision Most Programs Get Wrong
Most corporate uniform programs pick the polo because it seems easier, then discover curling collars, twisted side seams and puckered logos. What actually separates woven from knit, and which failure modes belong to which.

The decision gets made for the wrong reason
A corporate uniform program usually chooses between a woven collared shirt and a knit polo early, and usually on the wrong basis: the polo looks cheaper per piece and more comfortable, so it wins. Eighteen months later the complaints arrive, and they are oddly specific. Collars roll up. Side seams have migrated toward the front. The embroidered logo has puckered into a raised lump.
None of those are manufacturing accidents. They are the known failure modes of knit structures, and they are predictable from the fabric decision made at the start. Woven has its own list. The point is not that one is better, it is that the two fail in completely different ways and the program should choose knowing which list it is signing up for.
The structural difference in one paragraph
Woven fabric is two sets of yarn crossing at right angles under tension, so it is dimensionally stable and stretches roughly 20 to 30 percent, mostly on the bias. Knit fabric is a single yarn looped through itself, so it can stretch enormously, commonly cited up to around 250 percent across the width, and recover almost all of it. That single difference drives everything downstream: how it drapes, how it takes a seam, how it holds a printed logo, how it behaves in an industrial laundry.
The knit structures a polo is actually made from
- Single jersey, commonly 120 to 200 GSM and around 160 to 180 for polos: smooth face, textured back, softest handle. It curls at every cut edge because the loops all pull toward one side, and it is the structure most prone to spirality.
- Single pique, commonly 170 to 200 GSM: the classic corporate polo. Knit and tuck stitches form a honeycomb texture that holds embroidery well and breathes.
- Double pique or honeycomb, commonly 200 to 220 GSM: heavier and more voluminous, more body for a uniform polo.
- Interlock, commonly 180 to 220 GSM: a double knit, identical on both faces, the most dimensionally stable of the group. It does not curl, because the two needle beds cancel each other's curling force.
- Rib, commonly 200 to 260 GSM with a little elastane: used for collars and cuffs only, and the reason a collar keeps its shape or does not.
The four knit failures worth knowing before you order
- Collar curling: caused by imbalance between the knit structure, yarn recovery, finishing, or differential shrinkage between collar and body. A heavy collar still curls if the rib recovery is weak, so specifying a heavier collar is not the fix people assume.
- Spirality, the twisted side seam: residual torque in the yarn rotates the loops as the fabric relaxes, so the side seam migrates toward the front after washing. It is specific to single-knit structures and worsens with high-twist yarn and long loop length. Interlock is far less exposed.
- Embroidery puckering: a knit stretches under needle penetration and there is nothing rigid to support it. Knits need a cut-away stabiliser that stays in the garment permanently. A tear-away, which is fine on woven, is a named cause of puckering on knit.
- Dye migration into a print: polyester dye sublimates during print curing at roughly 260 to 340 degrees F and bleeds into the ink. It is why a white logo on a dark polyester polo turns pink or grey in the wash, and it needs low-cure dye-blocker inks rather than standard plastisol.
What each format is genuinely better at
- Woven shirt: front-of-house and client-facing roles, anything worn with a blazer or a name badge, programs where a crisp line matters and where an industrial laundry is involved. Takes embroidery with simple backing, holds a pressed shape, sizes predictably.
- Woven shirt trade-offs: higher laundering demand, less forgiving across body shapes, and it will crease where a knit will not.
- Knit polo: warehouse, field, event, hospitality back-of-house, and any role involving movement or heat. More comfortable, more size-tolerant, cheaper to launder.
- Knit polo trade-offs: the four failure modes above, plus a shorter smart appearance life. It looks worn sooner even when it is not damaged.
- The hybrid, increasingly the common answer: knit polos for most staff, woven shirts for managers and front-of-house, one shade family across both so the program still reads as one uniform.
What to specify so the failures are contractual, not discovered
- Dimensional stability: test to ISO 6330 or AATCC 135. Commonly specified acceptance for knits is no more than 3 to 5 percent change in either direction. Note these standards are procedures and do not themselves set a pass mark, so the number has to be agreed in writing.
- Spirality or skew: commonly specified at 4 to 5 percent maximum, tested to AATCC 179 or ISO 16322-3. Most programs never specify it, then discover it.
- Pilling: Martindale to ISO 12945-2, or the ICI pilling box to ISO 12945-1 which is the more usual method for knits. Grade 3 to 4 or better at the final cycle is a common mass-market acceptance, grade 4 for premium.
- Strength: knits are tested for bursting strength, typically ISO 13938-1, because they stretch in all directions at once. Woven is tested for tensile strength in a single direction. Asking for the wrong one signals you have not specified a knit before.
- Colour fastness: ISO 105-C06 for washing and ISO 105-X12 for rubbing, graded on the 1 to 5 grey scale. Heavy-duty workwear generally needs grade 4 minimum or it bleeds in industrial laundering.
Where we sit, plainly
We weave. Our shirting, suiting and yarn-dyed checks are woven fabric, and a knit polo is not something we make or pretend to. If your program is woven shirts and trousers, that is our product and we will quote it against your spec. If it is knit polos, a knitting cluster is the right supplier and this post is meant to help you brief them properly rather than to steer you back to us.
The one thing worth doing either way: if the program runs both formats, get the shade approved across both fabrics at the same time. Woven poly-viscose and knit cotton take dye differently, and two garments approved separately against the same colour reference can still sit visibly apart on the same person.

Frequently asked questions
- What GSM should a corporate uniform polo be?
- Commonly specified bands are 150 to 180 GSM for promotional and event polos, 200 to 220 for mainstream corporate wear, and 220 to 260 or higher for heavy-duty and trade use. These are trade practice rather than a published standard, and GSM alone does not determine durability: a well-made 180 GSM garment can outlast a poorly finished 220.
- Why do polo collars curl after washing?
- Imbalance between the knit structure, the yarn's recovery, the finishing, or differential shrinkage between the collar and the body, with dryer heat accelerating it. A heavier collar does not fix it if the rib has weak recovery. Contrast tipping curls more when the tipped edge has different tension from the collar body.
- Is embroidery better on a woven shirt or a knit polo?
- Woven is more forgiving. It only needs stabilising during stitching, so a tear-away backing is usually enough. Knits stretch under the needle and need a cut-away stabiliser that stays in the garment permanently; using a tear-away on a polo is a direct cause of puckering.
- Does a knit polo shrink more than a woven shirt?
- It moves more, though not always in the direction people expect. Knits compact as loops relax, so the fabric gets smaller in area and its GSM actually rises after washing. Woven fabric that has been properly heat set and sanforised is more dimensionally predictable, which is why sized garments in a large program are often easier to manage in woven.
- Can one uniform program use both woven shirts and knit polos?
- Yes, and hybrid programs are increasingly common: polos for most staff, woven shirts for managers and front-of-house. The thing to control is colour. Approve the shade on both fabrics together rather than separately, because the two fibre systems take dye differently.
